{August 30, 2009}   180 lbs. of tomatoes

canning1.JPG

tom and our friend sarah came home with 180 lbs. of tomatoes yesterday.

much canning needed to be done. immediately. between game night at our house (and during game night), and two brunches, those two worked their butts off getting the tomato tower under control. i was present for support and constant clean-up.

there are still a few left to deal with, but even the best canners must rest.

sarah and tom have a whole funny tale about how they came into possession of 180 pounds of goodness, but my favorite detail involves pulling a box’s worth of heirloom tomatoes out of what was essentially the farm’s trash - a front-loader, filled with gorgeous tomatoes, headed toward the compost pile.

this one is the the biggest crowd-pleaser of the bunch:

it is insanely big. two hands big.

mom says:

I used to do that when Tommy was little. It is a lot of work. Did you can them in chunks or did you make sauce? Either way you’ll love having them to make soups for those cold winter Mass. nights.
