we went with friends to see the movie beowulf in digital 3-D this weekend. none of us had seen anything in 3-D in forever. in fact, the last time any of us did, we had to wear glasses that look like these:

now, however, the glasses look like this:

(my glasses are at the top for scale)
here is a fuzzy, dark, camera picture of tom and willie sporting the snazzy shades:

cuties!
be careful though. according to the package illustration, if you wear the glasses outside of the theater, the sun turns into a laser beam and pokes you in the eye!

it was time to tackle the fallen leaves today.
the recently fixed-up old leaf blower was a big help:

tom’s brother, willie, came for a visit this weekend and pitched in:

good job, guys!

same time, same project next weekend?
such simple ingredients:

such delicious hummus:

thanks to laurie for the perfect recipe!
who knew the biggest mistake we had been making was adding oil? so many recipes call for oil…but they are wrong-o!
this week’s theme is about how you got around when you were little.
and for me, that was often on a bike:

i wish i still had those stripey knee socks! check them out:

and then when my sister was ready, i was nice enough to pass along a few pointers:

oh, and thanks everyone for the concern over my doctor-imposed fake flu. i am feeling much much better today after a good night’s sleep.
can’t blog. i’m wearing too many sweaters:

why did i let them talk me into getting the flu shot?
i know, i know, because of my bad respiratory issues i am one of the people who is supposed to get it. but…
i have gotten the flu vaccine 3 times in the last 7 years. each time i have gotten sick afterward. and during those other years when i have refused it, each doctor explained that it was probably just a coincidence, that it is only a super small percentage of people who feel the side effects. and that lots of people “think” they get sick from the shot.
well, this year i am putting it in writing:
i am clearly one of the small percentage of people who feel the effects of the shot.
i finally found a doctor in our new area, and so i went this afternoon to establish myself as a new patient and get some prescription refills. she made a very convincing argument for me to get the flu shot. and i caved.
i am now sitting here in two sweaters and a hat because of the chills. and i am achy. and my throat hurts. it’s not awful, it’s just annoying. i hope this is as bad as it gets.
i am not necessarily totally anti-flu vaccine. it was just a bad idea to get it the day before we are planning to go to a friend’s house for dinner. next year, if i cave again, i’ll have to remember to check my calendar.
i have been looking for just the right project to show off this gorgeous yarn gifted to me by laurie:

it is woolarina handpainted yarn and it is lovely.
it almost became a pair of socks for me, but then i found this great stitch pattern which shows the color changes so nicely:

and now it is halfway to being a scarf for me:

this is one of those projects that is portable and easy to work on when i am out and about, since it is just a single pattern repeat. so i work on it at times like: waiting for the band to come on stage, waiting at the doctor’s office, when i am involved in conversations at knit group. because of this, lots of random people have seen it and i get so many compliments on both the color and the pattern. everyone asks to touch it.
