recently, an item has entered the house that makes sunday lunches pretty much non-existent.
tom’s birthday waffle maker:

it has been in use almost every sunday morning since he got it and because of it, sundays have become a two-meal day.
i like mine topped with some fruit and syrup, while tom enjoys a smearing of unsweetened strawberry jam.

we now have a pretty good recipe of our own that combines ideas from vegan with a vengeance and a recipe from ben. (my favorite detail is that all of the sweetness comes from bananas)
before we had settled on a tasty way of doing it ourselves, we bought a box mix to get us started. since i can’t have dairy, finding a suitable box mix was a challenge. but i found this:

how can you not buy a box with such a cute graphic design?!
these were pretty good, but i’m glad to have moved past the box.
i have lots of old milk bottles:

this isn’t even half of them.
but they aren’t just any old milk bottles. the ones i like are printed with graphics, advertisements, public health messages and/or reminders. here are some of my favorites:

and bonus points are given if they rhyme:

yup, that’s right. i’m terrified of mummenschanz.

many of you who know me, already know this. but here i am, laying it out there for all of the rest to see, thanks to this week’s “this is…” theme.

i know they are supposed to be funny and whimsical, but ever since childhood they have freaked me out. to this day, my heart skips a beat and i have an awful gut reaction to them. at least as an adult i can be slightly fascinated by them, but that childhood terror still bubbles right up to the surface.
if you aren’t as spooked by them as i am, feel free to go here for a small video overview of their work, or here to see them on the muppet show. good luck sleeping tonight if you watch them!
i’m such joiner!
three buttons is running another meme. each week, someone will choose a way to finish the sentence, “this is…” and everyone will post a photo about the theme. (three buttons is in another time zone, so it will probably always seem to her like i’m a day late in posting. but it’s still sunday to me!)
the first one is “…my favorite cup”

i love mugs. at one point i had more mugs than i had cabinet space and have since cut my collection waaay back.
this big mug is one of 6 that i picked up at target, and there isn’t anything particularly unique about it, but it is super comfy. in fact all of the mugs from the set are cozy, but i seem drawn over and over to the purple and blue ones.

the blue one i am also fond of was in the dishwasher and so missed the photo shoot.
these mugs have relaxingly delivered me both coffee and tea. but never a cold drink. you see, i have two quirks about mugs and beverage temperature:
1. i don’t, at all, like drinking cold beverages from pottery mugs. ick. glass, see-through, mugs may get a slight pass on this rule. because, really, aren’t glass “mugs” really just drinking glasses after all?
2. i don’t like drinking coffee from a glass, see-through mug. again - ick. why not just serve coffee in a drinking glass? it would be just as strange.
(feel free to mock me…but i am pretty sure you have strange drinking/eating rules that you stick by, too! fess up!)
and since i have been pretty bad with the flashback fridays lately, here is a picture of a formerly-favorite cup:

how could you not love a bright yellow cup with feet?
